Happy for this book available for English pupils who like geography,

and I hope we can also write this kind of book for our pupils in China.

One-sentence summary

Because this kind of book solves the most painful question in studying geography:

why is it useful?

Considering studying geography at university? Wondering whether a geography degree will get you a good job, and what you might earn? Want to know what it’s actually like to study geography at degree level? This book tells you what you need to know. That’s where the Why Study series comes in. This series of books, aimed at students, parents and teachers, explains in practical terms the range and scope of an academic subject at a university level and where it can lead in terms of careers or further study. Each book tries to both enthuse the reader about its subject and answer the crucial questions that a college prospectus does not.

This is Alan’s 30th book. He is currently head of geography at a secondary school in England. He is scheduled to be the President of Geographical Association for 2021-22. He has over 25 years of teaching experience and is a prolific blogger and Twitter user. He is actively sharing his thoughts and progress through social media.

This is a book published on 20th Oct 2020, available at bookshops and amazon, in paper version and kindle.

Honestly, I would not say translating this book into Chinese will mean as much as it means for English readers. Because all countries have different paths in developing school geography and academic geography. The employment market is also related to the development of the society and the public views geography as a school subject and an academic discipline. But this does not mean these seven crucial questions are not significant due to the changing cultural context. In fact, I would say now is the time to promote this kind of book, podcast, videos so that we can publicise geography beyond school classroom and ivory tower, involve in the public to know:

What is geography?

Why is geography so important?

Where can you study geography, and which (type of) university course might be best for you?

How has the subject we call geography changed over time, and why does it matter more than ever?

What important knowledge and skills will you gain and develop through a study of geography?

What careers are available that will allow you to use your geography qualifications to full advantage?

What do those who work with geography for their careers actually do with the subject knowledge and skills they acquired?

You are most welcome to leave a comment to start a discussion, and I am happy to talk with you about any of these topics. I do not think there will be a standard answer, and also hope you would not expect a standard answer or a fixed recipe to follow.

I am always curious to know how everyone builds up their view and how come they hold these perspectives. I hope to present all possible worlds for young people who live in the Anthropocene.
