When: 1620
Where:
Coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Who:Pilgrims
What:
Escaping religious persecution, a group of Puritans led by John Carver, Myles Standish among others experienced the conclusion of a particularly arduous 65 day Atlantic crossing to set up a new community in the New World when they spotted land for the first time since leaving England.  Over the next few weeks they explored the Cape Cod area before settling in New Plymouth and post facto applied for a charter to set up a new colony (they were initially headed for Virginia colony).

Why

significant

In what became the first permanent English colony in New England the Pilgrims intended to live amicably with the natives but cultural differences and competition over meager resources often played havoc with good intentions.  Like the English colony in Virginia the initial attempts by England’s colonists were met with horrifying hardships, but the colonists’ intentions to stay, rather than return to Europe with whatever riches they could get (beyond the land, there were no “riches” anyway) was what ensured a continued presence and ultimate expansion of the colonies.
