When: Feb 27, 1922
What: Supreme Court upheld the 19th Amendment, which guarantees women’s voting rights.
Why significant: The 19th Amendment, which states that “the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex,” was the product of over seven decades of struggles, petitions, and protests by women suffragists and their supporters.
At last, the 19th Amendment officially took effect in 1920 when Tennessee ratified the amendment, achieving the required three-fourths majority of state ratification.
