Roger Williams Banished
When |
Where |
Who |
What |
Williams was a member of the Puritan community newly established in America but had his own attitudes towards religious freedom that included abolition of slavery and equal relations with the Native American tribes. He was in short order found to be a disruptive influence on the mainstream colonial leaders and banished out of the colony.
Why
significant
With others who felt that the Puritans in the New World had not fully separated itself from England, Williams acquired territory south of Plymouth Bay from the Natives and founded Providence: the capital of Rhode Island. There he continued expressing his thoughts on peaceful co existence with the natives and banning slavery in Providence, if not all the English colonies. Unfortunately, while proper, his philosophies rarely turned into reality as other factors shaped Anglo Native relations and the latter inevitably lost their lands.
