【瓦尔登湖03】
The stars are the apexes of what wonderful triangles! What distant and different beings in the various mansions of the universe are contemplating the same one at the same moment! Nature and human life are as various as our several constitutions. Who shall say what prospect life offers to another? Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant? We should live in all the ages of the world in an hour; ay, in all the worlds of the ages. History, Poetry, Mythology! -- I know of no reading of another's experience so startling and informing as this would be.
星星是一个个多么奇异的三角形的顶点！在宇宙各种各样的星宿中，有着多么遥远而又不同的生命在同一时间里凝望着同一颗星星！大自然和人生正如我们不同的体制那样各不相同。谁说得准，生活会给别人提供个什么样的前景？还有什么比我们彼此的目光一瞬间的对视更伟大的奇迹吗？我们应该在一小时之内经历这个世界的一切时代；是的，所有时代的所有世界。历史，诗歌，神话！我不知道还有什么比像这样阅读别人的经验更让人惊异和增长见闻。
So thoroughly and sincerely are we compelled to live, reverencing our life, and denying the possibility of change. This is the only way, we say; but there are as many ways as there can be drawn radii from one centre. All change is a miracle to contemplate; but it is a miracle which is taking place every instant. Confucius said, "To know that we know what we know, and that we do not know what we do not know, that is true knowledge." When one man has reduced a fact of the imagination to be a fact to his understanding, I foresee that all men at length establish their lives on that basis.
我们被迫如此认真而真诚地活着，尊重我们的生活，否认变革的可能。我们说，这是唯一的生活之道；但是，能从一个圆心画出多少条半径来，就有多少种生活之道。一切的变革审视起来都是奇迹，但是这是每时每刻都在发生的奇迹。孔子说过，“知之为知之，不知为不知，是知也。”当一个人把想象中的事情归纳成他理解了的事情时，我可以预见，所有的人最终将以此为基础建立自己的生活。
