Major Andre’ was the British Army’s liaison with American General Benedict Arnold, who was preparing to defect to the British during the Revolution and handing over not only the American fort of West Point but also potentially capturing General George Washington.

Why

significant

Andre’s capture ultimately exposed Arnold’s plot, forcing him to defect to the British.  He was unable to bring any tactical advantage with him, and Andre’s eventual execution as a spy left many British officers distrusting Arnold: he never achieved the renown he had sought and his name became synonymous with treason.
