When: December 28, 1900
What: Carry Nation attacked a Kansas saloon
Why significant: Carrie Nation was a radical member of the Temperance Movement, which opposed alcohol before the advent of Prohibition in the 1920s. She is particularly noteworthy for attacking alcohol-serving establishments with a hatchet.
On this day, Carry Nation attacked a saloon in Wichita, Kansas, shattering a large mirror behind the bar and throwing rocks at a titillating painting of Cleopatra bathing.
Even though by the time the U.S. adopted prohibition in 1920, Carry Nation was largely forgotten. But she unquestionably helped lay the foundation for America’s “noble experiment,” that is the nearly 14-year period from 1920 to 1933 when the manufacture, sale or transportation of "intoxicating liquor" was illegal in the U.S.
