The creators and writers of Friends have shared how Matthew Perry managed to convince Julia Roberts to make a cameo in Friends. It’s been 25 years since 'The One With The Superbowl’, which brought in more than 60 million viewers in the US alone when it aired right after the Dallas Cowboys beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1996 Superbowl.

Remarkably, the sitcom – which will be celebrated with a Friends reunion on HBO Max this year – was given the most coveted slot imaginable just two seasons into its 10-year lifespan, featuring a string of celebrity guests – Brooke Shields, Chris Isaak, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Julia. The Pretty Woman icon starred as Susie 'Underpants’ Moss, who was named after one of the writers’ real-life friends.

Susie famously convinced Chandler Bing (Matthew) to follow her to the public bathroom and try on her underwear. She then fled the scene, leaving Chandler trouser-less with nothing but her underwear to cover his modesty when he was discovered by a suitable smug Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) hiding in a cubicle. The scene was based on an experience co-writer of the episode, Jeff Astrof, actually endured.

Celebrating 25 years of the episode, the creators spilled all to the Hollywood Reporter, with Kevin Bright revealing how Julia, the biggest film star in the world at the time, joined the Friends cast. 'Do you know the story of how we got her? Matthew asked her to be on the show. She wrote back to him, “Write me a paper on quantum physics and I’ll do it.” My understanding is that Matthew went away and wrote a paper and faxed it to her the next day,’ Bright recalled. Co-writer Alexa Junge added: 'They may have met before the episode, but she was interested in him from afar because he’s so charming. There was a lot of flirting over faxing.

He could do pretty well without us, but there was no question we were on Team Matthew and trying to make it happen for him.’ Matthew and Julia briefly dated after filming the episode, which according to the team, felt inevitable on set. 'I felt like Cyrano [de Bergerac],’ said Anstrof. ’Like, 'Chandler is going to date Julia Roberts and I’m going to go home to my horrible girlfriend.’ That’s my memory of that episode.’
