He insisted on choosing competent people with political integrity to be government officials so as to materialize his ideal of making his country both strong and prosperous. However, the noble men in the imperial court sought hard to oppose, slander and lash out at him. As a result, he was sent into exile in the deltas of the Yuan River and the Xiang River. In despair he finally drowned himself in the river. He is regarded as the greatest poet in the early period of ancient China. His poetry is of refined language and rich imagination, and has exerted a great influence on the late literary creation.
