洪特霍斯特Honthorst以描绘人工照明的场景而闻名，最终获得了“夜之杰勒德”的绰号。

在他职业生涯的早期，他访问了罗马，在那里他的绘画风格受到卡拉瓦乔的影响从而非常成功。回到荷兰后，他成为了著名的肖像画家。

1623年，他成为乌得勒支圣路加公会的会长。

他为波西米亚国王(也是在汉普顿宫)的四个大孩子画了一幅很亲密的集体肖像，其中两个大孩子被描绘成戴安娜和阿波罗。他还在海牙为国王的女儿莱昂诺拉伯爵夫人画了一幅肖像。
