在被The Great Gatsby和The Tale of Two Cities虐的不行的时候,是Nicholas Sparks的小说给了我学英语的勇气。
1. Are you seeing anyone?
2. He couldn't put his finger on it.
3. His mind clicked.
4. I was uncounscious on and off for days.
The Tale of Two Cities中,狄更斯先写了一段开场词:
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness...
The romantics would call this a love story, the cynics would call it a tragedy. In my mind it's a little bit of both..."
My life? It isn't easy to explain. It has not been the rip-roaring spectacular I fancied it would be, but neither have I burrowed around with the gophers. I suppose it has most resembled a blue-chip stock: fairly stable, more ups than downs, and gradually trending upward over time. A good buy, a lucky buy, and I've learned that not everyone can say this about his life.
I'm neither strong nor healthy, and my days are spent like an old party balloon: listless, spongy, and growing softer over time.
There are no momuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough.
I love you, Allie. I am who I am because of you. You are every reason, every hope, and every dream I've ever had, and no matter what happens to us in the future, every day we are together is the greatest day of my life. I will always be yours. And, my darling, you will always be mine.
And if, in some distant place in the future, we see each other in our new lives, I will smile at you with joy, and remember how we spent a summer beneath the trees, learning from each other and growing in love. And maybe, for a brief moment, you'll feel it too, and you'll smile back, and savor the memories we will always share together.
I would love to tell you that everything will work out for us, and I promise to do all I can to make sure it does. But if we never meet again and this is truly good-bye, I know we will see each other again in another life. We will find each other again, and maybe the stars will have changed, and we will not only love each other in that time, but for all the times we've had before.
