pick sides=to support one person or cause and not the other

明明是选一边来支持, 为什么是pick sides呢?
我也不懂, 可能是选出支持的一边, 和反对的一边?
包括choose sides, take sides这些都是用复数的sides
be on one’s side=站在某人的这一侧, 支持某人. 这时候就是用单数的side了
