咏安庆

天柱山前皖水流，

两分吴楚在舒州。

云开江寺禅宗盛，

雨洗黄梅燕啭稠。

桐派衔华书兴替。

徽班咀玉谱春秋。

乾坤似把奎星换，

百舸伸张竞自由。

Ode to Anqing

Tr. Wu Haohao

River Fine around Mount Pillar flows,

The City that overlaps Wu 'n Chu glows.

Worshippers of Buddha Zen come 'n go,

But Huangmei opera^[1] nev’r fall low.

Tongcheng school^[2] carries the history on ,

And Huiju^[3] plays the life of someone.

Things of the past went far far away,

Boats in the River with waters sway.

[1] Huangmeiopera, which originated in the environs of Anqing in southwestern Anhui, is aform of traditional Chinese opera popular across China.

[2] TheTongcheng School was a Chinese literary school that flourished during the Qingdynasty advocating the philosophy of the Neo-Confucian values that rose toprominence during the Song dynasty. The four prominent figures of the schoolare Fang Bao, Liu Dakui, Yao Nai and Zeng Guofan.

[3] Huiju, aform of traditional opera originating in the Huizhou-speaking areas of southernAnhui, is one of the major precursors of Beijing Opera.
