Declaring an Engineering Concentration

You will declare a concentration (hopefully in Engineering!) toward the end of your fourth semester. You can change your concentration at any time, as long as you can still meet your new graduation requirements.

1. Choose one of the engineering degree programs. This is not always easy - you can discuss your choices with any member of the faculty at any time, and in particular, your freshman and sophomore advisors, your Meiklejohn advisor, the faculty teaching your first and second year engineering classes, as well as the concentration advisors will be happy to help you understand your options.

2. Check the detailed requirements for your concentration on the University Bulletin, and make a list of courses that interest you.

3. Arrange a meeting with your concentration advisor, who will help you choose between courses and finalize a program.

4. File your concentration on the ASK system. After you log into the system, navigate to the “Declarations” tab in the top menu. Then select the button that says “Declare a New Concentration” or “Change” to revise an existing declaration. You can find some answers to common problems in ASK here

5. After you submit your concentration declaration electronically, your advisor will review and approve it or suggest changes (electronically). Once you have approval, you will be able to register for courses.

You can change your course plan at any time - if you want to make a change, simply update your program in ASK and resubmit it.

The Concentration Requirement

All degree candidates must fulfill the requirements of one of the recognized fields of concentration, an approved joint concentration, or an approved special concentration. A student’s concentration is a commitment to a particular discipline, field, or specialization. All concentrations provide students with opportunities for appreciating, assimilating, and making applications of a coherent body of knowledge.

Harvard currently offers fifty fields of concentration, some of which have multiple tracks. Each concentration is overseen by a faculty member serving as the Head Tutor or the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Overviews of each concentration, its specific requirements, and how to obtain more information about the concentration are included in Fields of Concentration and Secondary Fields.

In many concentrations, students may pursue either a basic program or one that makes them eligible for honors in the field. Honors-eligible programs generally differ from basic programs in that they require a senior thesis and/or advanced course work. To be awarded the degree with honors in the field of concentration, the student must complete the honors requirements within the concentration, receive an honors recommendation from the department or committee that supervises the concentration, and meet the College-wide requirements for an honors degree. Students should understand that completing the degree requirements for an honors-eligible program does not guarantee that they will graduate with honors (see "Requirements for Honors Degrees”).

Several concentrations may limit enrollment by selecting their concentrators from those students who apply. These concentrations include Environmental Science and Public Policy; History and Literature; Comparative Literature; and Art, Film, and Visual Studies. Each of these programs attempts to select those students whose needs and interests will best be served by its offerings and will admit as many students as its teaching resources allow.

Environmental Science

Public Policy

History and Literature

Comparative Literature

Art

Film

Visual Studies

Techers refer to their majors as an "option." Most students select an option near the end of their first year, begin to specialize during their second year, and concentrate on their chosen field in their third and fourth years.

The Institute is divided into six academic divisions:

  • Division of Biology and Biological Engineering

  • Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

  • Division of Engineering and Applied Science

  • Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences

  • Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences

  • Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy

Engineering Majors

Dartmouth gives you time to branch out, look around, and experiment with different subjects. You’ll take a full range of liberal arts courses, from the arts and humanities to the social and physical sciences. In fact, half of your classes will be in non-engineering subjects, so you can deepen your understanding of the world—and prepare to make a difference in it.

Declaring a major

What you need to know

Most students declare a major in the spring term of their first year at MIT. Those who do not must decide on a major by the end of their sophomore year. Visit the Office of the First Year for information about choosing a major.

Some key points to remember:

  • Meet with your advisor and declare a major by spring Drop Date of your first year.

  • The process for declaring your major is available from the Office of the First Year each spring.

  • Your major declaration takes effect at the beginning of the summer term, and you will be assigned a new advisor in that department.

First-year students and declaring a major First-year students are not expected to declare a major during their first year on campus.  A few may do so in their second term— particularly students intending to major in a STEM field — but doing so isn’t required or expected, even for potential STEM majors.

Advising for students who declare a major Once a student declares a major, the DUS or the DUS’s designee becomes the student’s official adviser, replacing the student’s college adviser, since an undergraduate student may have only one adviser at a time. Students are especially encouraged to take this into consideration before declaring a major.

Expectations What follows below are expectations for students intending to major in STEM and non-STEM fields, instructions on how to declare a major, and other useful information.

if you are majoring in mathematics, a science or in engineering

You are expected to declare your major during sophomore year, preferably in the fall term.

if you are majoring in most other subjects

You must declare your major no later than the start of your junior year. At that time the DUS of your major, or a designated departmental representative, becomes your faculty adviser and the person who reviews your course schedules in junior and senior years.

Two majors (double major)

If you plan to complete the requirements of two majors, please talk with your residential college dean. Note that each major must be completed independently of the other, with no more than two term courses overlapping. You must petition the Committee on Honors and Academic Standing (CHAS) to be allowed to complete two majors. To do so, click on the Petition to Complete the Requirements of Two Majors, available on the University Registrar’s Forms & Petitions webpage.

Choosing a field (or fields) of study can be challenging. It's perfectly okay to spend your formative semesters exploring all the options Rice has to offer before deciding on a major. While you explore, consider these questions to help guide your decision!

I indicated a major when I was accepted to UR, but I've changed my mind. Should I do something about that?

Students who no longer plan to pursue the major they indicated on their application for admission, should notify the Academic Records Office at ccasrec@ur.rochester.edu of their changed plans. Their program of study will be updated in UR Student.
