International Women's Day 2020

This year's March 8th met the Sunday when Hermione and I usually have our weekly conversation on geography and education.

The first question I got from her was: Do you know what day it is?

This is a question I did not know how to respond at first and then I admitted: I knew, but I had no action.

Hermione further asked me: why there was no action?

So our conversation began with my reflection.

Firstly, my own thoughts.

There are two kinds of emotions in my heart. One is that we can usually do something and we don't need to do it at this special moment. The other is that (I am) being too lazy to make a move and have no idea to actively participate.

This conversation pushed me to go one step further, realising that in our communication, Hermione often plays the role of facilitator. When I have an idea but delaying my action or have no idea yet, she is always willing to give me an incentive to act or some new idea.

So this time an idea starts to sprout in my heart:

I should act, if not now, then when?

Secondly, we talked about the issue of discourse space.

Faced with a series of topics such as inequality between men and women, there are often many voices in the society and posed online, and sometimes they are full of thoughtless, completely emotional, and even discriminatory views.

If we do not make our own voices at this time, then the discourse space will be occupied by these wrong views.

Therefore, if we insist on our own views, we need to express our views bravely, and let the correct views be more and more people see.

Thirdly, as a male educator, I asked Hermione who is also a woman:

In the schools, in what ways can I show respect and concern for female employees and students?

Here is her four responses to me:

(1) Women are by no means weak and do not need special care at all times, but in the face of female colleagues and female students, asking if they need help is a sign of respect for women.

(2) There are unavoidable physiological differences between women and men. There are more female colleagues of childbearing age in your school. Perhaps you should pay attention to your colleagues before and after childbirth, because childbirth will bring them tremendous physical and psychological pressure and help them within their capacity.

(3) Adolescent students have rich emotions and may be confused by problems outside the classroom. Teachers may need to take these into consideration so that they can avoid dealing with students' problems in a simiplistic and rude way.

(4) Avoid simply labeling male and female students, such as: boys are suitable for natural sciences, girls are suitable for humanities and social sciences, girls have poor rational thinking, girls have worse mathematics than boys, and so on. Every student should live by himself and herself, and everyone can reach out the wider world and explore more possibilities.

In the end, I took action.

That night, three things were done to draw students' attention to gender differences and equality issues.

The first is to share the movie "Kim Ji-young: Born 1982" in the class WeChat group.

The second is to launch an anonymous survey, asking students to share their experiences of being treated differently because of their gender, as well as their relatives and friends, and their views on gender equality. Finally, 12 questionnaires were collected, of which 11 female students and 1 male student were collected and shared with students in the class group.

Third, I shared the article of Hermione's wechat public account, which contains many stories of women.

Hermione's goal is to grow into an active and responsible citizen.

I think that I can also work in this direction. If students can also grow into active and responsible citizens, the society probably would also become better.

As an educator, I can contribute a little bit of my voice and action.

Hermione's feelings:

Proud to say this is from my friend and peer.

Cedric谈他的老师与母亲 #EachforEqual 【In English and Chinese 英中双语】

I just want to make sure you if you are reading, even it is IWD2020 campaign, #EachforEqual does not exclude men (nor anyone else), see: Cedric谈他的老师与母亲 #EachforEqual 【In English and Chinese 英中双语】

I am considering seriously if I mis-interpret myself that women are more important, I have no intention to cause this misunderstanding. And I try not to compare as I see there is no need to compete. I prefer to say that let us not forget we all need a equal world to fully become the one we want to be.

Male and female, and other genders, definitely have something different, but there is no need to always take the differences against each other to become a gap or critiera in judging which is stronger or superior.
