The Zero Challenge of 54challenges

Speaking to the public with my heart

I first received a post from my friend Xiaoliao, the comment from her is to a popular 4min-video (actually a commercial ad from a video website bilibili) saying so-called 'nice' words to the 'new’ generation. As I do not have enough time and do not think the video worthy of my time, I will skip the translation. Mainly my friend and I are challenging the definition of “choice” and “diversity”, we would like to criticise the puppet-show directed by  consumerism. In short, access to different videos are good, but what we are also expecting to raise your voice to the public for what you are supposed to say.

The Fifth Challenge of 54challenges

Write a postcard to a young person

When designing the challenges, an idea jump to my mind, what if a young person not from China write a postcard or drift bottle to a Chinese peer, and we will open to any reply, this sounds like a fun challenge! That is why I bothered someone who is very friendly and curious, here we go:

Dear Mr X.

When was the last time you thought there was a really interesting question?

When I was young I was always interested in why, why things worked, why things happened, I’ve always wanted to understand the world. I asked more questions.

Now I am an architect, I design places, spaces, interiors, exteriors even gardens and furniture... therefore it looks as if I’m giving answers to questions. But actually answering questions is also a way of asking questions. Therefore I’m doing the same thing...

Did you learn more asking the question or receiving the answer?

Cedric

A huge birthday wish to Luna's mum! I wish her can embrace life with vitality and energy. And here is a postcard to an teenager:

To another teenager,

Jeannette Walls is the author of my favourite book from when I was a teenager; The Glass Castle. This book meant a lot to me, as I saw a reflection of my own life within the story.

This book is a memoir, so the stories I felt connected to also made me feel close to the author, even though she lived on the other side of the world.

I think this was an important book for me to read as a young woman, as it made me think about the ups and downs of childhood, the commonality of female experiences, as well as my own potential to follow my aspirations. I wish every child had the opportunity to read a book that inspires them in this way during their childhood.

So, my question to you- have you ever felt connected to a character in a book, maybe one from another country?

Luna

Jeannette Walls

The First Challenge of 54challenges

Write stories of women inspired me

Livia and I know each other last April as she came to London from Brazil for an academic conference. She is a teacher. During our time together, I am attracted by her personality, how can one be so warm, confident, and open-minded? And I also sensed that she is reliable and strong which also makes me feel that she is trustworthy. I would say after reading her story, you are likely to understand why I say so.

There are a lot of women who inspire me. Two of them come from my family. My grandmothers.

My mother´s mom came with her sister without her parents, when she was 13, to work as a housekeeper in the city where I now live (Cubatão-SP, Brazil).

She never had the opportunity to go to school, could not read or write, but was the first to defend that her own children could have access to school.

She usually bought books for them and all of her five children went to college.

Her life wisdom was amazing, she gave all the structure to allow them to have more than she had.

My father´s mom also migrated to my city alone, when she was 40, with 11 children and my father in her belly.

She cooked and sold food to people and also sewed clothes to sell. She then opened a restaurant and from her work and leadership, which was something unusual for a woman to do at the time, sustained all her 13 children.

I am very proud to be their granddaughter. I am sure that if today I have all the possibilities around me is because so many women like them struggled and never gave up.

The first message I got from social media is VV sharing the book she is reading in both Chinese and English.

Recently, I’m reading An Introduction to the History and Philosophy of Science, written by John Schuster. Though it is an introductory work, it is enlightening and striking for me. I used to argue that natural science was objective and rational, and an attempt to approach reality. However, every scientific revolution is a great change of thought. Science is much more than I thought. “Reality” may not be a fact, but a construct.

Light up the "Equality of Teachers and Students"-Teacher Peifen

Author: Lily Jiang

If I want to extract one woman who has a great influence on me from memory, the first thought is Teacher Peifen, not only because she once went to the United States alone for eight years’ study, but also because of her ideas and beliefs.

Before I met her, I stayed on the superficial understanding the idea of "equality between teachers and students" as a slogan.

Even when I went out to have my public classes in the first half of last year, I was troubled by students as they were naughty. I was being too naive and stubborn not really practicing humanism, let alone "equality".

However, in the second half of last year, I was fortunate to meet Ms. Peifen in Taiwan.

Since then, the concept of "equality between teachers and students" has become my life belief, and it will also be a principle that I will continue to practice in the future.

One of the things that happened to me is probably unforgettable for life.

Before meeting her, I had always felt that it was okay for a teacher to be negligent in the class. For example, it was normal to forget to let a classmate speak. I did not expect that Ms. Peifen would sent me an e-mail to express her apology because of this incident.

I did not reply to her email as I was busy doing something else, so when Ms. Peifen saw me in the cafeteria, she immediately trot to catch up with me and said in a lovely Taiwanese tone: "Student Jiang, why haven’t you reply to my email? Are you angry at me or you are too busy? My memory is not very good, I forgot to let you share it, I am truly sorry ... "

I think I will probably never forget such a moment, a university professor apologises so sincerely to a student in the cafeteria. Later in her class, she also apologised to me in front of all the classmates.

She said that this was her principle.

Everyone is equal, not to mention that teachers and students should apologise when they made mistakes, and she did not think it is embarrassing for teachers to apologise to students.

You can talk freely without any scruples, just like chatting with friends.

Perhaps it is precisely because of the ideas and beliefs of the teachers, and in the cross-domain curriculum design class, the students started with having nothing to say from the beginning to open debates in the end.

At the same time, classmates often share daily worries and confusions with teachers, and Teacher Peifen also helps them to solve.

Despite the heavy tasks in that course, the memories are full of harvest and sweetness.

I also hope that one day I can do this, get along with students like friends, and truly achieve "equality between teachers and students."

The Fifth Challenge of 54challenges

Write a postcard to a young person

If you are a frequent reader of GEO, you may know Jiacong quite well, here we go:

1. Reply to a letter from an international friend

I think answering the questions really allows me to learn. On the one hand, answering questions and promoting self-thinking and exploration is a growth in itself. On the other hand, sometimes when accessing data in order to understand the problem, you may encounter new problems. You need to solve the new problems to understand the original problem, and there will be a series of problems that can be explored.

2. Youth Day activities

I want to write to the young people who just started their career.

Through the May 4th Youth Day, I want to discuss the "sincerity" in the workplace with fresh graduates.

Although I left campus for less than three years to enter the workplace, I also sensed the occasional "turbidity", and I heard some friends complaining that: although acting cautiously, (he/she) still left a bad impression on others.

Yes, when you first enter the workplace, you are full of enthusiasm to work, and at the same time you have a trace of worries, anxiety, fear of doing things badly or offending others.

However, when I see the procrastination, flatter, and bureaucracy in the workplace, I think not of avoiding or integrating into it for self-protection, but the precious value of keeping one's true heart.

In my work, I like to speak more directly and express my opinions rationally and reasonably.

If the opinions are different, I can discuss them further. Regardless of whether the final opinion has been adopted, we have sincerely expressed our opinions, which is helpful for the solution of the problem, and colleagues are watching.

Treating each other sincerely and being kind to others are my life principles, especially when they are not familiar with each other.

In the workplace, I regard colleagues as "comrades" in the process of growing up. We all want to help students grow! We, personally, may also become new friends. No matter as a friend or a colleague, sincere and frank exchange of opinions is the only way to resolve conflicts.

I am working in the education fields. Every time I encounter this kind of problem, there is actually a touchstone which can help us. That is, to ask myself, does this help students grow? Does it help your growth? Is it helpful for school development?
