Introduction of former
residence of Sun Daolin
The apartment of SUN Daolin and WANG Wenjuan is located in Wukang Building at No.1836-1858 on Middle Huaihai Road, formerly known as East Meite Apartment and also known as Normandy Apartments. Founded in 1924 by the International Savings Society, a French business, this building is an early works of Ladislaus Edward Hudec, a famous architect, which covers an area of 930 square meters. It has eight stories of reinforced concrete structure with an appearance of French Renaissance style. As an apartment with outside corridor, it adopts the classical division of three sections with the first and second floors as the foundation. The first floor serves the function of shops.A continuous arched corridor runs along the street and the stone walls imitated with cement are decorated with keystones. The second floor is directly on the arched corridor; over the wall between windows are set twofold large supports of baroque style, which bears the balconies on the third floor. All these reflect a rich classical style. After the victory of the War against Japanese Invasion in 1945, KONG Lingwei, the second daughter of KONG Xiangxi, bought the property right of the whole apartment. After the founding of the New China it was renamed as the Wukang Building and many celebrities in the literary and art circles once lived here. The apartment of SUN and WANG was once the residence of Miss KONG, the second daughter of the finance minister. On February 15, 1994, it became a Heritage Architecture issued by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.SUN Daolin (1921-2007), a movie actor and director, has his ancestral family from Jiashan in Zhejiang province. Born in Beijing, he had a former name of Yiliang. In 1947 he graduated from the Philosophy Department of Yenching University. From the next year, he successively acted in films produced in Shanghai Tsinghua Film Company, Kunlun Film Company, and Shanghai Film Studio. In his lifetime he acted in nearly 20 films as roles of different personalities and identities. The films in which he starred include The Crow and the Sparrow, Reconnaissance across the Yangtze River, Family, Ever-bright City, The Eternal Wave, Threshold of Spring, and LI Siguang. He directed and starred in Thunderstorm and Extraordinary President, and also directed films like ZHAN Tianyou. In addition he dubbed foreign films such as Hamlet and The Idiot. He won the first prize for excellent films issued by the Ministry of Culture during 1949-1955 and the award for outstanding contribution to Chinese film in 100 years.WANG Wenjuan (1926-), born in Shaoxing in Zhejiang province, was a Yue Opera actress. Her performance featured the depiction of the spirit and manner of characters and the expression of their inner feelings. She once served as director of China Theatre Association and head of the Red Chamber Troupe of Shanghai Yue Opera House. Her aria was characterized by being simple, plain, natural and smooth. In early years, she was influenced by some well-known artists in this field. In her later long-term artistic practice, she absorbed widely from others and digested it to form her own style of singing, becoming known as the “WANG Style”. She created a wide range of different stage images. Her main works include A Dream of Red Chamber, Empress Chung, Snakefish, Empress WU, The Story of Western Garden and Eternal Happiness. When SUN Daolin and WANG Wenjuan fell in love, they often walked in the midnight along the Wukang Road, Huashan Road, Hunan Road and Huaihai Road. From her apartment to his and then from his to hers, they found it hard to part from each other. In the moonlight, the shadows of phoenix tree leafs witnessed their dedicated love. In 1964, their daughter was born. In the following year, they replaced their two apartments by the fourth floor in Wukang Building. In the living room about twenty square meters, the most eye-catching were the bookshelves filled with all kinds of books. Facing south is a transparent French window of landscape. On the balcony outside of the window the lush plants planted by SUN form a whole piece of pleasant stretch of green together with the green trees in the former residence of SONG Qingling across the road. All this opened up an elegant and secret space of artistic conception for the couple in the hustle and bustle of the earthly world. At the beginning of the 1960s, the wife had a surgery for vocal illness, and her voice was apt to be hoarse. Each night when she was back home after performance, she was always delighted to find a dish of fresh pear on the fruit plate. It was specially prepared by the husband, since he had deep love for her while she had sung all night and dried her throat. In order to help his wife overcome a guttural sound caused by vocal operation, the husband, who had training in vocal music and also had rich stage experience, would inevitably volunteer to play the piano for his wife to practice voice or for a rehearsal. In addition, he would analyze the inner world of the characters in specific contexts and give hearty suggestions for her reference. In this way the couple explored artistic creation hand in hand. One day, he helped his wife sing an excerpt from the opera Eaglewood Fan: Meeting in the Study. In a soft, mild and marvelous tone color, the wife sang, “today the husband and wife meet in the study”, when the husband gently stopped playing the piano and looked into her eyes, saying with deep emotions, “darling, this sentence reflects complex feelings of husband and wife in difficulty, which should be represented with rise and fall of tone, i.e. rising gradually at the words 'husband’ and 'wife’.At this remark, he started to have a try to be followed by the wife. The husband and wife sang into the opera their personal experiences of weathering the hard times and never leaving without another. The sound of strong affection and mellow charm was really more moving indeed, lingering long in the warm artistic home. The husband also introduced to her the vivid characteristics of two famous masters of Beijing operas, helping her get a good command over the singing method to express love with breath and fuse emotion into sound. Increasingly this film artist also became proficient in and familiar with the Yue Opera in the exchange with his wife.Forty years went by, and the small nest for the husband and wife to linger in the world of art was always beautiful and warm, witnessing both the deep love between husband and wife who had helped one another in difficult time and also their persistent pursuit of art.
