凌老师,今晚被我儿子问了这样一个问题,没有找到通俗易懂的解释!这个问题出现在《新概念英语(二)》第29课的短文前问题:Does Captain Fawcett think any trip is too dangerous?为何这个any 后面的trip没有变成trips,能否帮我儿子解惑一下?凌哥您好。您在2021-02-16《如何才能真正提升初中生英语听力?》一文中提到的语法课用英文上,具体怎么操作呢……新老师上听说课、阅读课 写作课,用英文授课还可以,但是语法课不太会操作。求指教!New Concept English II
Lesson 29 Taxi!
Question: Does Captain Fawcett think any trip is too dangerous?
Captain Ben Fawcett has bought an unusual taxi and has begun a new service. The 'taxi' is a small Swiss aeroplane called a 'Pilatus Porter'. This wonderful plane can carry seven passengers. The most surprising thing about it, however, is that it can land anywhere: on snow, water, or even on a ploughed field. Captain Fawcett's first passenger was a doctor who flew from Birmingham to a lonely village in the Welsh mountains. Since then, Captain Fawcett has flown passengers to many unusual places. Once he landed on the roof of a block of flats and on another occasion, he landed in a deserted car park. Captain Fawcett has just refused a strange request from a businessman. The man wanted to fly to Rockall, a lonely island in the Atlantic Ocean, but Captain Fawcett did not take him because the trip was too dangerous.
Hi, there! Happy Spring Festival!Since your son is learning English, I’d like to explain in English. The sentences and words won’t be too difficult for him and I’m sure he’ll understand them very well.First, let’s compare the question before the text with the last sentence in the text. (Mr Ling has made some changes to make the comparison clearer. Reconstructing the sentences is also a good way to help explain grammar.)(1) The captain thinks ( any trip is too dangerous).(2) The captain did not take him because he thought ( the/that trip was too dangerous). These two sentences tell the difference in meaning between any trip and the/that trip.Next I will answer your son’s question with two examples. You have two toys. You’d like to share the toys with your best friend, Tony. So you say to Tony. You: I have two toys. You can have one of them.Tony: Thank you. Which one can I have? You: Either one. (= Either toy. Just choose one. It doesn't matter which one.)You have some toys. You’d like to share the toys with your best friend, Tony. So you say to Tony. You: I have some toys. You can have one of them.Tony: Thank you. Which one can I have? You: Any one. (= Any one of these toys.)These examples clearly show that a singular noun/pronoun can be used after any.By the way, any one is different from anyone. Anyone means anybody. Also, I will show you some examples from some dictionaries to show how any is used.
(from Collins Dictionary)
(from Webster Dictionary)
Finally, Oxford Learner's Dictionary clearly shows the different meanings between ANY + plural noun ( in 1) and ANY + singular noun ( in 2).
If we want to explain grammar in English, it is very important to use easy examples to demonstrate grammar instead of describing grammar phenomena using terminology.Let SS understand and accept grammar through simple examples. Let them see how grammar is used and imitate it rather than know why. Don’t train students to be grammarians.Doctors know how to cure the patient because they know the mechanism and know what medicine to give. The patient cures himself by taking the medicine the doctor gives to him or the medicine he used in the past.In most cases, grammar is what to be accepted, followed and imitated, as what a patient does. And as the patient continues to use medicine this way, his medical knowledge often increases, and one day he himself might become somewhat a doctor, as the Chinese proverb says.
