A small barn belonging to the O’Leary family was the source of the fire that broke out around 9pm on this date caused, according to some, when a cow knocked over an oil lamp. The long drought of the season, high winds and a dilapidated watering system all contribute to the fire quickly spreading through the predominantly wooden buildings of the city. Over two days the fire consumed almost 3.5 square miles of the city, killed up to 300 people ad left over 100,000 people homeless.
Why
significant
Great fires of major cities were often a concern and a tragedy, but the recovery efforts inevitably led to improvements. In the required rebuild, Chicago safety and fire codes were revamped and rigorously enforced. The lessons learned also led to revising plans in other major cities throughout the world.
