Capone Convicted of Tax Evasion

When

Where

Who

What

When:  1931
Where: Chicago, Illinois
Who:Alfonse G. Capone.
What:

Capone was the “kingpin” of organized crime in 1920’s Chicago and certainly guilty of numerous murders (directly and indirectly including the famous Valentine’s Day Massacre) and other violent crimes as well as violations of Prohibition laws.  However, it was impossible to make any of those charges stick.  With the discovery of his secret account books however, it was possible to prove he was guilty of tax evasion.

Why

significant

Income Tax laws, via the 16th Amendment, were new and the fact that the government could not get the biggest gangster everyone knew of on any of his other crimes was seen as both a failure as well as a clever tactic to get a violent man off the streets.  Capone began his prison term in Alcatraz, but untreated syphilis won him an early parole as he retired suffering from the disease’s mental symptoms which included dementia.

Chicago gangster Al Capone had a reputation for deploying unbridled violence in his pursuit of power
