In another apparently crippling blow to the American cause during the Revolution, the British Army takes the continental capital city after brushing aside the American Army.  The Continental Congress escapes to Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Why

significant

The opening years of the Revolution were dominated by colonial defeat with few exceptions where Washington managed to preserve the bulk of his army despite defeats in the field.  His tenacity in surviving defeats wore down the British who ultimately retreated back to the loyalist haven of New York City the following year, ultimately ceding the northern colonies/states to Washington.
