When: 2011

Who: US Armed Forces
What:
In a final dissolution of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, homosexual servicemen and women no longer risked prison or dishonorable discharges for being gay.  The policy to that point, started in the 1990’s was to turn a blind eye to the private lives of servicemen and only prosecute them if they were insistent on being open about their orientation.  Before that, they faced prison time and dishonorable discharges.

Why

significant

Civil rights of homosexuals continues to be a political point of debate as sexual orientation was yet to become a “protected” status along with gender, race and birth origin. Protections of gay marriage continue to this point to be debated, despite positive steps forward.
