Flying Into the Future 飞向未来Beijing’s new Daxing International Airport, a marvel of logistical planning, architecture and economic integration, will open soon.
北京的新大兴国际机场,一个运筹规划、建筑和经济一体化的奇迹,即将开放。On the southern border of Beijing and spilling into Hebei province is a gigantic field occupied by a massive starfish, a structure with six arms. The starfish is the world’s largest airport terminal, and the surrounding field is for flight operations. All together it is nothing short of an engineering and logistical marvel.

The barren land on which Beijing Daxing International Airport was built, about 30 miles south of the city’s downtown area, was once a hinterland that few ever had reason to visit.

But the announcement of the new airport, along with a plan to relocate some government administrative functions there, drove development of Daxing district into the fast lane.

Cui Xiaohao, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform, said the airport, through its five years of construction, had become an important economic pillar in the development of southern Beijing because it will help rebalance the city’s southern area with the crowded central one.
北京市发展和改革委员会副主任崔晓豪表示,经过5年的建设,该机场已经成为北京南部发展的重要经济支柱,因为它会有助于平衡城市南部和拥挤的中心地区。
“Daxing airport is opening the south gate of the capital and will help gradually shift Beijing’s non-capital functions to neighboring locations and upgrade the region’s transport, especially in the south. It’s also a good way to boost coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area.”
“大兴机场将开启首都南大门,将帮助北京逐步将非首都功能转移到邻近地区,并提升该地区的交通,尤其是南部地区的交通。这也是促进京津冀地区协调发展的好办法。”
As construction of the airport progressed, an international airport zone sprang up adjacent to it this year. In an area of about 20 square miles, nearly 260,000 residents will live and work, thanks to the 200,000 jobs created.
