Coupled with the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights identified the rights and powers of the people (interchangeably interpreted as int individual citizens and/or the states) under Federal law.  These codified laws remain the basis of personal freedoms of citizens to this day as Amendments to the Constitution.

Why

significant

While sacrosanct to “constitutionalists, the individual amendments have been redefined over the years and at other times flat out violated by both state and federal governments.  The right of free speech and bear arms (included under the First and Second Amendments) have been curtailed in the interest of public safety.  As have the rights of due process (found in the Fourth Amendment) during times of war.  It remains up to the citizens to protect their rights against government overreach.
