Spring

spring, the sweet spring, is the year's pleasant king;
then blooms each thing, then maids dance in a ring,
cold doth not sting, the pretty birds do sing,
cuckoo, jug-jug,pu-we, to-witta-woo!

the palm and may make country houses gay,
lambs frisk and play,theshepherds pipe all day,
and we hear aye birds tune this merry lay,

多年之后，我才知道，原来外国的鸟并不像中国鸟那么尽如人意，它们性格乖张，并不像中国的鸟那样优雅而胆怯，人从旁边走过，它们只会仔细观察这人手里有没有面包，到底打不打劫。同样地，它们的叫声大多没有韵律，没有节奏，我听了孔雀叫，海鸥叫，鹦鹉叫，还有各种不知名的奇怪的鸟叫声，如果这夜莺叫是歌声，其他更多的鸟只能算是在嚎叫。这又让我想起了《第十二夜》里的公爵最后一次被怼：

Olivia If it be aught to the old tune my lord,

It is as fat and fulsome to mine ear

As howling after music.

总的来说，Nashe是费了大功夫才把Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo! 这样不刺耳的鸟叫声找出来的，文学中的春天总是会比现实美好一些。
