Cause(原因) and effect(结果) is one way to explain things that happen around us. Many things happen because something caused or influenced them to happen. Sometimes it is hard to look at a cause and find out what caused or influenced them to happen. Sometimes it is hard to look at a cause and find out what causes the effect. It may help you to start with the effect and use your reasoning(推理的)skills. Think about all the things you know that could be reasons for the effect you can see.

For example, you may see someone putting on a heavy jacket. This is the effect. To look for a cause, think to yourself, ' What would take someone put on a heavy jacket?' Maybe the person is going outside into very cold weather. Maybe the person works in the penguin pen(企鹅圈养地)at Sea World. Maybe the person is going to visit an ice skating rink where the air is kept very cold. All of these things could be a cause for putting on a heavy jacket.

Now, think about a second example. The effect is a boy named Abi has to go to the head teacher's office. What are the possible causes? Maybe he bullied(欺负)another student. Maybe he is just being picked up early. Maybe he is being given a prize!

Here is another example for you to think about its cause and effect. Cait, 13, was trying to fall asleep when her 8-year-old brother, Doug, came into her room. He looked around a bit, but seemed really out of it.Then Doug went back into the hallway and stood there looking straight up at the hall light for quite a while. Little brothers can be very strange, but this was really much too strange. Cait's father appeared and explained that Doug was sleepwalking. What's the cause and effect, could you tell?

Kids nowadays are growing up 'connected', learning to use technology at a surprising speed. Technology is a regular part of school now! Kids as young as Kindergarten are using smartboards, IPads, and computers to complete tasks in the classroom. Older children rely on the Internet for research, getting homework, sending work to teachers, and even accessing( 获得) textbooks. In fact, today's kids have been given the name 'digital(数字)natives' because they are facing technology almost from birth, so new things have never been a greater challenge in the hands of our children. The Internet, Facebook, iPods, pictures and texting on mobile phones and all of these are the ways kids communicate today. They have become a central part of their lives. It allows them a private life that most of us know very little about.

Kids just don't think about the results of the new world of social networking and text messaging. They don't think that it is dangerous to send a photo of a particular person to a foolish person, who might send it to some friends that may send it to a hundred others and the next thing you know, it's on many Facebook sites and all over the Internet forever. They don't think that way because they don't have the life experience that we do. We have to help them.

The key to knowing how they manage this privacy(隐私) is our 'connection' to them. How closely do we connect with our kids and pay attention to what they're doing? And how often do we talk to our children... and really listen to them? If they believe in us and know that we will be there for them, they are more likely to follow our advice. If we talk openly about what we believe in, what we stand for, those values will become their own before long.

( ) 4. What is the author's opinion about children?

A. They are good at accepting modern things.

B. They are well understood by their parents.

C. They almost like to surf on the Facebook.

D. They know the Internet dangers well.

( ) 5. What does the underlined word 'us' in paragraph 1 refers to?

A. Kids. B. Internet teachers. C. Internet users. D. Adults.

( ) 6. Why do kids think differently according to paragraph 2?

A. They only understand their own private lives.

B. They are badly influenced by new things.

C. They do not have life experience.

D. They don't depend on their parents.

( ) 7. When will children accept their parents' advice?

A. When they are surfing on the Internet.

B. When parents communicate with them deeply.

C. When parents believe in what they are doing.

D. When they meet some dangerous situations.

选项。

Is Fresh Air Really Good for You?

We all grew up hearing people tell us to 'go out and get some fresh air'. 8 According to recent studies, the answer is a big YES, if the air quality in your camping area is good.

9 If the air you're breathing is clean — which it would be if you're away from the smog of cities — then the air is filled with life-giving, energizing oxygen(氧气). If you exercise out of doors, your body will learn to breathe more deeply, allowing even more oxygen to get to your muscles(肌肉) and your brain.

Recently, people have begun studying the connection between the natural world and healing(治愈). 10 In these places patients can go to be near nature during their recovery(恢复). It turns out that just looking at green, growing things can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and put people into a better mood(情绪). Greenery is good for us. Hospital patients who see tree branches out their window are likely to recover at a faster rate than patients who see buildings or sky instead. 11 It gives us a great feeling of peace.

12 While the sun's rays can age and harm our skin, they also give us beneficial Vitamin D. To make sure you get enough Vitamin D — but still protect your skin — put on sunscreen right as you head outside. It takes sunscreen about fifteen minutes to start working, and that's plenty of time for your skin to take in a day's worth of Vitamin D.
