好的东西不一定畅销，但是畅销的东西一定是有它畅销的道理，或许是性价比高，也或许是品质是真的好，但无论如何畅销的东西始终是大众的首选购买的对象，甚至有的时候足不出户都知道什么很畅销。 Sell 作及物动词时，意为”出售，售卖“。一般来说东西都是被卖的，因此谁卖什么东西，谁就作主语，例如： Most supermarkets sell a range of organic products.多数超级市场都经销一系列有机产品。The stall sells drinks and snacks.这个摊位卖饮料和零食。Are you still selling your car?你还想卖你的车吗？
而畅销的通俗表达方式就是 sell well，此时畅销或热销的东西作主语，其中的 sell 是不及物动词，例如： Chinese silk fabrics sell well on foreign markets.中国丝绸畅销国外。The book sold well and was reprinted many times.这本书销路不错，重印了好多次。也许是因为 sell well 的平庸性，越用就感觉越平淡，缺少一点激情。不过你放心，现在马上给你来点带 hot 的表达方式，那就是 sell like hotcakes，注意这里的 hotcake 是可数名词，意为“薄糕饼”，相当于 crepe 或 pancake，例如： These books are selling like hotcakes.这些书很畅销。John says that the new cars are selling like hotcakes.约翰说新车卖得很好。It is very hot outside. These ice lollies will sell like hotcakes.外面很热。这些冰棍会卖得很好。Hotcake 在任何集市上都是稳定的，而且很快就卖完了，猜测是 hot 的原因，因此用 sell like hotcakes 来形容词畅销，即形象又贴切。
热销的一个必然的结果是什么呢？那就是售完，用 sell out 或 be sold out 来表示，此时被售完的东西作主语；我们刚好把它跟 sell like hotcakes 整到一块去，这样彼此都有个依靠，例如：The merchandise was quickly sold out.商品很快就卖完了。This week's performances are completely sold out.本周的演出门票全部售完。当要表达谁售完什么东西时，用 sell out of sth 或 be sold out of sth；它们跟上面的区别是把热销的东西转成介词 of 宾语即可，例如上面的两句可以改成： We sold out the merchandise quickly.我们很快就把商品卖完了。We're completely sold out of this week's performances.我们这周的演出门票已经卖完了。现在我们把这两个都跟 sell 有关的放到一个句子中，让它们永远在一起，例如：The tickets for today's race sell like hotcakes and are completely sold out within 2 hours.今天比赛的票卖得很好，两小时内就卖完了。If these products didn't sell like hotcakes, how would they sell out rather quickly.如果这些产品不畅销，怎么会很快就卖完呢。
