What: President Woodrow Wilson outlined the Fourteen Points in a speech on war aims and peace terms to the Congress.
Why significant: To achieve lasting peace in Europe, in his speech President Woodrow Wilson called for
the abolition of secret treaties
unselfish peace terms from the victorious Allies
the restoration of territories conquered during the war
the establishment of a postwar world body to resolve future conflict
a reduction in armaments
an adjustment in colonial claims in the interests of both native peoples and colonists, and the right to national self-determination
freedom of the seas
the removal of economic barriers between nations
The speech was distributed to Germany and Austria-Hungary and contributed significantly to their agreeing to an armistice in November 1918. In 1920, Woodrow Wilson was awarded the Nobel Peace Price for his peace-making efforts.
