In the face of US shipping losses to German uboat packs in World War II, entrepreneur Howard Hughes won a tender from the US government to build the largest flying boat in history. Wartime shortages of aluminum required wooden construction, leading to the project being known as the “Spruce Goose.”
Why
significant
The design requirements and Hughes’ own eccentricities led to delays in production and accusations of Hughes squandering government funds, to the point that he was brought up on charges of fraud. On this date, two years after the end of the war and the need for the plane, Hughes had the parts of his creation delivered to Long Beach, CA, assembled and flew the plane for a total of 26 seconds flight time., proving it to be flightworthy. The plane was then put on display.
