很多副词都是形容词通过一般的规则变化过来的，除了词性的变化，意思大多不发生很大的变化，如 slowly 或 badly 等，但是也有一些副词如 hardly等，看起来是从形容词演变过来的，但实际上与对应的形容词是南辕北辙。 还有副词如 largely，它也是从 large 演变过来的；large 是一个纯粹的形容词，意为”大的，大规模的“等，通常体现在大小和数量上，例如： He's a very large child for his age.就其年龄来说，这孩子个头很大。A large proportion of old people live alone.一大部分老人都是独居。Women usually do the larger share of the housework.妇女通常承担了大部分家务。
有的时候 large 也指范围广的，意为”广泛的，众多的“等，例如：Some drugs are being used on a much larger scale than previously.与以前相比，某些药物的使用范围更广了。If we look at the larger picture of the situation, the differences seem slight.倘若我们对情况看得全面些，分歧看起来就微不足道了。但 large 对应的副词 largely 已经不用来表示大小或数量了，它是一个程度副词，意为”在很大程度上；多半；主要地“；有时也用来说明原因，常与 because 连用，例如：It was largely a matter of trial and error.这主要是个反复实验的问题。He resigned largely because of the stories in the press.他的辞职多半是因为新闻界的一些报道。Largely 在程度上相当于 maily 或 mostly，或者用 almost completely 来形容，因此 largely 不能用来等表示“非常、完全或极大地”等意思，自然而然也没有“广泛地“等意思，例如：新环路的开通极大地改善了市中心的交通流量。Traffic flows in the city centre have been greatly improved by the opening of the new ring road.
