《简·爱》（Jane Eyre）是十九世纪英国著名的女作家夏洛蒂·勃朗特的代表作。主人公Jane从小和舅舅一起生活，舅舅去世之后，舅妈和她的孩子视Jane为眼中钉，总是欺负她。最后Jane被送到了孤儿院。从此Jane成为了孤儿，在孤儿院里生活，尽管生活非常清苦，但是Jane在这里交到了新朋友，得到了老师的疼爱。
我们的导读从这个地方展开。
第一句：
From that day on, with this new encouragement and new friends, I began to succeed at my lessons. Because of my excellent grades, I was given the opportunity, usually reserved for the older students, to start learning French, to play the piano, and to develop my skills at drawing.
1、succeed at sth. 在...方面成功
eg：Everyone wants to succeed at work.
2、encouragement n.鼓励 encourage v
eg：encourage sb. to do sth.
3、because/because of：
because of：后面+名词/名词短语
because：后面+句子
4、excellent：程度比good好
5、reserve：预约，保留。文中修饰opportunity。
6、be given opportunity to do sth. ：某人被给予机会做...
7、develop one's skills at sth.：提升某人某方面的能力
第二句：
I also learned a very important lesson that was to stay with me for life: it was better to eat small portion of poor food where I was surrounded by love, than to feast on fine food where I was surrounded by hatred.
1、英文中写的比较好的句子都是对仗的，than前后的内容：吃得不好但是被爱包围着比起吃得好但被恨包围着强。
2、feast on：尽情享受，大吃大喝。
eg：feast my eyes on the amazing view：大饱眼福
3、fine：修饰美食。
eg：fine wine：美酒（注意押韵）
4、be surrounded by：被...所包围
第三句：
So with all the hardship I endured at Lowood, I had made friends who cared about me，that was certainly much better than eating food served at Gateshead, where misery and hatred were all I had ever known.
1、endure：容忍，忍耐
2、care about sb. 关心某人
3、Gateshead：在这个地方我唯一了解的只有痛苦（misery）和仇恨（hatred）。
It was better to eat small portion of poor food where I was surrounded by love, than to feast on fine food where I was surrounded by hatred.
