Philip Akkerman was born in 1957 in Vaassen, the Netherlands. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and at Studio 63 in Haarlem. In January 1981, he had an impulse to paint some portraits of himself, not realizing that he would never get out of hand. To this day, he has created more than 3,350 self-portraits and an equal number of sketches. Akkerman explored the infinite possibilities of paint, painting and art in his creation, and he is still thinking and creating to this day.
