| In 1858, a French engineer, Aime Thome de Gamond, arrived in England with a plan for a twenty-one-mile tunnel under the English Channel. | 1）注意句中的人名与engineer是同位语关系，所以在阅读中可以跳过。 2）tunnel，隧道。 |
| He said that it would be possible to build a platform in the centre of the Channel. | 1）it+be+possible+to do，做某事是可能的。 2）platform，平台、站台。 3）in the centre of，在...的中心。注意centre为英式英语的拼法，美式英语拼作center。 |
