The Double Ninth Festival
Tr. Wu Haohao
Morning dew is autumn’s favorite son,
Double Ninth Festival in west wind blows on.
Cornus flowers bloom, tears come to my eyes.
Climbing the hill high, my heart to you ties.
Clouds as white as snow, to my hometown float,
Waters clean and green, wind their way up 'nd low.
When maple leaves are falling down on your hair,
With the wine I lost in the chilly air.
Note:
The Double Ninth Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday observed on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar.
According to the I Ching (《易经》), nine is a yang number; the ninth day of the ninth lunar month (or double nine) has too much yang (a traditional Chinese spiritual concept) and is thus a potentially dangerous date. Hence, the day is also called “Double Yang Festival” (重阳节). To protect against danger, it is customary to climb a high mountain, drink chrysanthemum liquor, and wear the zhuyu (茱萸) plant, Cornusofficinalis. (Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are considered to have cleansing qualities and are used on other occasions to air out houses and cure illnesses.)
On this holiday some Chinese also visit the graves of their ancestors to pay their respects. The whole extended families head to ancestral graves to clean them and repaint inscriptions. Food offerings are laid. Chongyang Cake is also popular. Incense sticks are burned.
