Senate Ratifies Louisiana Purchase

When

Where

Who

What

When:  1803
Where: Washington DC
Who:
Congress, President Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon Bonaparte
What:

The Louisiana Purchase doubled the territory of the United States.  The territory encompassed all the land that the tributaries of the Mississippi River originated. While most of this land was unexplored, President Jefferson hoped there would be a NorthWest Passage to the Pacific, and his democratic ideals required large tracts of land for citizens to all become agriculturally minded land owners.

Why

significant

The territorial expansion brought Americans into more contact with new tribes of Natives, many were initially friendly. There was no Northwest passage, but the explorations of the Corp of Discovery (Lewis and Clark) set the tone for America's westward expansion.
