On Christmas Eve,seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully.Skim milk was $2.99 white bread,89 cents with a 10-cent discount Leaving the cashier,he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.

At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves.”Where are they?”Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of this coat.George made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag.Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.

Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25%discount,for just $35.00,ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves,so they looked like new.Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.

George, calm on the outside but nervous inside,re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter,to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store.Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain.He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no.Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.

“Society has changed, people have changed,”he murmured to himself.”Years ago,if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost.”

Yet he did not give up hope.He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his.The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women’s and the other not black.a

About ten years ago, my wife and I took a trip to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I didn't like to carry all my keys in my pocket during a hike, so I took away the key to the car and left the rest in the car. When we came back, I put the key somewhere in the car without reattaching it to the key ring. Then we made a fire, cooked some food, and went to sleep in the back of the SUV.

The next morning, we were cleaning up our campsite when I saw a bird inside my car. I walked over, and it flew away. When we got in the car to go home, I couldn't find the key. We searched and searched even emptying out the car completely, but it was gone.

Then it hit me that the bird must have taken it. After all, those birds are known for stealing shiny things and decorating their nests with them. Keys are shiny. The bird was the thief! It made perfect sense to me. So I decided to find its nest.

But there is a problem: As everyone knows, the Grand Canyon is a little large in area, so I didn't like my chances of actually finding a certain nest belonging to a certain bird in a certain tree in all that space. But what other choice did I have?

My wife was not encouraging me. She said, “Are you crazy? You'll never find it! The Grand Canyon is the biggest hole on Earth!” I didn't answer and walked steadily forward until her laughter died away.

I struggled to keep hope as I searched dozens of trees and tracked every singing bird. It was like searching a needle in the sea. But, oh, how great my victory would be when I held the missing key from the bird's nest.

Fortune Cookie Friends

Jenny frowned (皱眉)as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.

“Moving here was a dumb idea,"  Jenny complained mostly to herself

"What's that?” Her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots.

"Nothing," Jenny mumbled (咕哝).The girl had been angry about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.

The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't know, and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her. Jenny sighed and got back to washing dishes.

On the day of the grand opening, Jenny's parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant, brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Jenny was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.

At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Jenny's age. As she filled their glasses, Jenny realized the twins were in her class. Jenny ducked her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.

Jenny's mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher.

"Honey, what are you doing back here? We need you out front with the customers."

"Mom, I don't want to be out there. There are kids from school!"

"So?" her mother asked. "That's good! Go to take them some fortune cookies and say hello!" She said to Jenny, pointing at the fortune cookies paper which read: “Many friends are found with a single
