01.

领养

Adopt

To take another person’s child legally into your own family to raise as your child.

I came across a nice news article about a family that adopted their kids.

How many children did they adopt?

Foster home

A place that operates by taking in children from their homes due to the lack of care or abuse of their parents.

Some foster homes rely entirely on volunteers.

03.

Orphanage

A place that takes in children with no parents or children whose parents have abandoned them.

We should give more money to orphanages so they can raise children with good food and in clean surroundings.

Abandon

To leave a place, thing, or person, usually forever.

We had to abandon the car.

By the time the rebel troops arrived, the village had already been  abandoned.

Carers

Someone who takes care of a person who is young, old, or sick.

Carers are amazing people, but they can be very expensive.

Vocation

A type of work that you feel you are suited to doing and to which you should give all your time and energy.

Photography is my true vocation, but I got caught up with my current job.

Being a carer has always been my vocation.

Biological parents

Your natural parents, parents who are related to you by blood.

Do you think we should tell Jimmy who his biological parents are?

08.

监护人

Guardian

A person who has the legal right and responsibility of taking care of someone who cannot take care of himself or herself, such as a child whose parents have died.

I am the legal guardian of Jimmy.

I was the guardian of Sarah for several years until her biological parents decided they wanted her back.
