Where: Lattimer, Pennsylvania

Who: Sheriff’s posse kills 19 unarmed miners who were on strike.

What:

During a march by around 400 striking miners, they were ordered to disperse.  When the marchers refused a struggle erupted and very quickly the posse resorted to shooting the miners.  19 were killed with as many as another 50 wounded.

Why

significant

Upon investigation, many of those shot were shot in the back (while trying to run away) leading to charges of intent on the part of the deputies and racism against immigrant workers.

The United Mine Workers Union experienced a surge in enrollment and widespread sympathy for the conditions miners faced.
