Frederic Leighton (1830-1896) is the most famous painter and the most prestigious academic painter of British aestheticism painting school in the 19th century. He enjoys a high reputation in the history of British painting. His brilliant artistic light even diluted Reynolds' influence and became synonymous with the Royal College School. Unlike most painters in the 19th century, Leighton did not study at the Royal Academy of art. He received painting training in Brussels, Paris and Frankfurt. In 1852, he moved to Rome, and classical art had a great influence on him.
In 1855, he returned to England. His work Cimabue's Madonna was exhibited and purchased by Queen Victoria, which was a turning point in his career. In 1878, Leighton was elected president of the Royal Academy of art. He was knighted in 1896. He is the only painter in Britain to win this award. He died in the same year.
This is a portrait full of plot. A young girl sits cross legged on the stall and reads the album carefully and attentively. The girl's light yellow dress is very textured, which contrasts with the dark background and sets off the girl's focus. The girl's face is charming, pure and serious, showing a better upbringing. The whole picture reflects a kind of academic preciseness and elegance.
