Song Xiaoci
The female Chinese writer Song Xiaoci was born Song Chunfang in rural Songzi City, Jingzhou, Hubei, January 1982. After graduating from university, Song took up the jobs of village teacher, radio editor and newspaper correspondent. In 2008, she relocated to Wuhan to work at a grass-roots cultural centre and in 2015 became a professional writer at the Nanchang branch of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles.
Song’s first work, a poem she composed at the age of 16, was published in the local Songzi City literary journal Weishui and kindled her interest in creative writing. Her novellas Open Screen, Walking Upright and Good Luck follow the hardships of young female protagonists as they migrate from the countryside to the city for work. According to critic Liu Ting, “Song Xiaoci’s stories boast incisive observations of the minute details of real life. You could say that all of Song’s novels are battlefields, with each character fighting it out for every inch of land. The battles take place between people and life, with society and with the self. This is the vivid world that Song creates within her stories.” Writer Su Bei notes, “Song Xiaoci’s stories confront reality head-on. They’re highly realistic. Song’s novels are unputdownable. She writes in a way that makes you really care about the fate of her characters.”
Open Screen tells the ups and downs of Qin Yuduo, a girl from a small rural family who has moved to the city. Qin does everything possible to get married into a rich family and solve the problems in her family and career. Walking Upright takes China’s demolition and resettlement program as its theme, with the struggles of ordinary people to transform their lives a key focus. The story is essentially a tragedy about people living at the lower rungs of society written in realistic style. Good Luck tells the story of a village girl named Wu Caihong who spends over a decade working as a nanny for her uncle in the city to save enough money to buy a house. Yet her marriage to a disabled man and her job as a network marketer exhaust her, and her life is thrown into desperation once her uncle decides to reclaim the house he helped her purchase.
Song Xiaoci is currently writing a novella set in the Chinese countryside about the tragic fate of a lonely old man and a foolish girl. The work is an embodiment of Song’s decades-long reflection on China’s rural issues.
