Shi Yifeng

Shi Yifeng was born in Beijing in October 1979 and still lives there today. In 1998, he was admitted to the Chinese language faculty at Peking University. He holds a master’s degree in literature and is currently the editor of Dangdai magazine. He is the author of such novels as The Fruits of the Red Flag, A Love Story in Peking, The History of the Mind, novel collections including There is No Chen Jinfang in the World and Special Ability Fight. He has won the October Literary Award, Baihua Literature Award, the Selected Stories Novella Award and other awards.

As a Beijing writer, Shi Yifeng’s works are mostly related to the city of Beijing. In his eyes, Beijing is not just an ancient city, a political center and capital city, but also a city that best reflects the changes in Chinese society and the changes in the mentality of Chinese people. The content of his works is mostly related to the current plight of the Chinese people, their spiritual confusion, and their ethos.

Shi Yifeng’s novella There is No Chen Jinfang in the World has been called a Chinese “Great Gatsby” story, depicting a country girl seeking material wealth and a high society lifestyle. The process of becoming rich overnight and gradually losing it all is very typical in modern Chinese society. Some critics believe that this novel of his returns to the traditions of Lao She and Mao Dun. Lao She concentrated on the fates of nonentities at the bottom of society. Mao Dun’s social analysis and economic perspectives are reflected in the novel. This novel has a sobering kind of realism.

His novel The History of the Mind focuses on the problem of the spiritual beliefs of the Chinese people and how people are obsessed with the current states of “blind history” like qigong, pyramid selling and so on because there is nothing for their spirit to rely on and the author uses this as a thread to demonstrate a series of social phenomena over the past few decades starting from the 1980’s and 90’s and leading up to the present day. Shi Yifeng’s novelettes, with There is No Chen Jinfang in the World as its main representative, and his novels, with The History of the Mind as its main representative, have entered various literary charts and won numerous literary awards.

At the end of 2017, Shi Yifeng brought out his new book Birth on a Borrowed Life. In this book, he uses a story reminiscent of Les Misérables, of an escaped prisoner on the run as the main line to paint a deeper and broader picture spanning several decades of the history of Reform and Opening Up. It touches on iconic social phenomena such as the collapse of state-owned enterprises, coal mine disasters, shopping mall fights, capital mergers and so on. However, the protagonists of the novel are not simply the images of losers facing the times. Their thirst for struggles in life and the realization of individual values highlights a unique heroic temperament. As a writer who focuses on the present life and focuses on the changes of the times, Shi Yifeng has created typical characters and stories that belong exclusively to today’s China.
