相信很多人都用过 whether or not，但是很少人考究过其中 or not 存在的意义。既然 whether 已经暗示了两个选择，那么后面的 or not 似乎显得多余或冗余，但是存在就是合理的，or not 有其特殊的意义，那么 whether 和 whether or not 其实是虽类似但不尽相同的两个连词。一、意图或目的不同 Whether 表示的是为听者或读者提供二选一的选择，显然在大多数情况下，这种选择更为正式和礼貌，而 whether or not 表示的是说话者想要限制或操纵想要达到的结果，因此选用哪个取决于说话者的意图或目的。1. Whether or not 表示说话者想要限制或操纵想要达到的结果，意为“不管”，例如：I will go to the party whether or not you want me to.不管你愿不愿意，我都要去参加聚会。解析：此句更进一步暗示，我不是在征得允许，而是在通告要发生的事。Whether or not you’ll get mad, I’m quitting my job.不管你会不会生气，我都要辞职了。解析：暗示我要辞职不是在征得你的同意，而是在通告你。因此，whether or not 在表达需要劝说、传达信念或决定的时候很重要。2. Whether 单独使用，表示至少一个隐含的或提供的选项是可能的，同时也暗示说话者对预期结果的半信半疑，例如：I’ve been battling against myself whether I should go or stay.我一直在和自己斗争到底该走还是该留。解析：不能决定是走或留，因此两者都是可能的。I need you to help me decide whether to buy a house or just rent an apartment for now.我需要你帮我决定现在是买房还是租公寓。解析：不能决定是买房还是租公寓，因此两者都是有可能的。因此，whether 在表达不确定采取哪种行动的情况下很有用。二、句法功能不同1. Whether or not 从句修饰动词，意为“不管…”，例如：She will finish the race whether or not she collapses.不管她是否崩溃，她都会完成比赛。解析：whether or not 从句修饰主动词 finish.I'll drive to New York tomorrow whether or not it rains.不管下雨与否，我明天开车去纽约。解析：whether or not 从句修饰主动词 drive.2. Whether 从句作名词成分，通常在句中作宾语和主语，意为“是否…，能否…”，例如：whether 从句作宾语：She asked whether he was still single.她问他是否还是单身。We had an argument about whether we should pursue the case.我们就是否应该继续审理这个案子发生了争论。whether 从句作主语：Whether she will win the pageant depends on the judges.她能否赢得选美比赛取决于评委。Whether he will continue to be successful in future is open to doubt.他今后能否继续获得成功值得怀疑。
三、whether 或 whether or not 通用的情况在所提供的选择只有一个且可以用 if 代替时，whether or not 中的 or not 就是可选的，也就是说此时的 whether 和 whether or not 是一样的，例如：He asked me whether [or not] I was upset.他问我是否心烦。I asked whether she had received the letter.我问她是否收到了那封信。解析：很多人觉得此处的 or not 是多余的，不过从语法角度来说这个是没错的，当然如果 whether 可以用，何故要多写 or not 呢？但是需要注意的是：当用 if 代替 whether 或 whether or not 时，句子就相当于第一类条件句，因此句子就充满假设性，并进一步限制了暗含的意义。 但是无论如何，如果使用 whether or not，那么后面就不能再出现另外一个 or 选项了，例如：他问我是真的不高兴还是假装的。✔: He asked me whether I was really upset or only pretending.❌: He asked me whether or not I was really upset or only pretending.四、问句中的 whether 或 whether or not当如果只是简单的询问一些信息时，用 whether 就可以了；当要强调肯定和否定的选择时，就可以加上 or not，例如： Do you know whether or not Greg is coming?你知道格雷格来不来？解析：通过增加否定 or not 来强调强烈的情绪。Could you tell me whether the session is at 2 or 3 pm?你能告诉我会议是下午2点还是3点吗？解析：此句中就没必要增加否定 or not，因为要呈现的是两个选项。
