为什么有的时候我们明明知道某些句子的意思，用起来不但没有画龙点睛之妙，却往往令人费解，或让自己进退两难呢？原因是很多句子已经被用作其他的比喻，如果不懂得抽丝剥茧，那么往往会陷于困境。
就像 you know better than that，它的字面意思是“你知道的不止这些”，但常用于当某人犯了错误时使用，特别是对于小孩；它虽然可以用于大人，但是会让人觉得你把别人当作小孩，例如：
Mary said you were rude to her, you know better than that.
玛丽说你对她很粗鲁，你很明白事理，不至于会那样。
