A Comprehensive Study

of the “Elephant” Essays

of the Large Dragon Issue

Before the official production of the Large Dragon in 1878, the Chinese Customs had experienced a preparation process for approximately one and a half years. The design selection should have been made between the sketch of “Two Dragons Encircling Yin & Yang Device” proposed by De La Rue of London and four other drawings drafted in China.

The diagram of “Elephant Carrying Wan Nian Ching Flowers” of the four Chinese sketches was full of Chinese cultural implications. Its design theme consisted of a ceremonial elephant carrying a basin of evergreen plant, along with two bats flying by either side of the elephant in the sky. This symbolized the Ching Dynasty would unify the country and last for thousands of years with unlimited heavenly blessings.

In this paper, the provenance of every existing “Elephant” essay was identified, and the research was extensively carried out in the following three categories, namely the design sketch, imperforate essays and perforated plate proofs.

The author feels there is still further research needed to be done on the “Elephant” Essays. Firstly, the designer of “Elephant” should have gone beyond “an unknown Chinese artist” as commonly recognized. Secondly, the process employed for die fabrication is an important research topic. Lastly, the sources of the trial essays, plate proofs, stamp paper and perforating machines would be interesting to know.
