“i.e.、e.g.、etc.”都是什么？终于弄懂了这些缩写！

三个常见英文缩写

i.e.

e.g.

etc.

i.e. and e.g. are both abbreviations for Latin terms.

i.e.和e.g.都是拉丁语缩写。

i.e. stands for id est and means roughly "in other words."

i.e.代表id est，意为“也就是说，即”（that is），

e.g. stands for exempli gratia, which means “for example.”

e.g.代表exempli gratia，意思是“举个例子”（for example）。

And etc. is easy to understand, which stands for “and so on”
etc.就很好理解，相当于and so on。

i.e.

i.e.出现时，往往意味着会有一个进一步的定义，可以是一个具体的解释，也可能是比喻或暗喻。

比如下面这句话：

Service charge is included in all prices, i.e., you don't have to leave a tip.

服务费都包含在价格里了，也就是说，你不用再付小费。

e.g.

e.g.的出现意味着后面的内容是例子，用来解释或说明前文的内容。

e.g.,

…the example stands for itself.

其实现在这个例子就够用了。

etc.

e.g.,

She knew all about my habits, my work, my future plans, etc.
她知道我的习惯、工作、未来的计划等所有情况。

注意

i.e.和e.g.后面要加逗号。

A comma is usually used after i.e. and e.g.
