如何从简单的英文中学点东西

一句老话：世上无难事，只怕有心人。

  • Opt, option, optional, opt for, opt out

首先Opt的名词option可以作为choice的一个替换词，口语中choose也常可以说成opt for. 形容词形式optional也很常用，例如”pain in inevitable, suffering is optional”

今天在图书馆看到的这个信息:

"You can opt out of SMS messages from bookstore at any time by texting STOP to TEXTBK(839825)."

里面有一个opt out，指的其是 refers to several methods by which individuals can avoid receiving unsolicited product or service information -- 停止推送的意思.

  • 另外在美国很多广告中的电话都是字母形式，例如上面的TEXTBK对应的键盘位就是839825.

  • 而且如果是在打电话的时候涉及到要拼写字母的时候，最好要用“常用的人名，动物，简单的词”来提高“准确性”， 例如"T” as in “Tom”,K as in kate”. 如果要拼写的内容比较长，也可以直接说“单词”，例如VMSWE, 可以直接说Victor, Mark, Saturday,William,Edward.

solicit如果查字典的话会有一个“拉皮条”(approach or accost a person with an offer of sexual services in return for payment) 的解释，当然还有to petition persistently; importune 下面图片是朗文字典给出的解释，（注意第三个解释）广告中常用的unsolicited就是指“没有订阅的信息”，很多美国家庭门前都贴有 “no unsollicated mail/material”.

  • 另外premise这个词的常用复数premises来表示the buildings and land that a shop, restaurant,company. 第二个意思是“前提” precondition.例如 the premise of marriage is MONEY.

婚姻中的婚前协议书的英文是prenuptial agreement, 在美剧中我们听到的是prenup, 生活大爆炸S7E22中, Professor Proton对Sheldon的建议就是: always, get a prenup.

  • 在停车场，或者快餐店里常可以看到一个指示牌上写着No loitering. Loiter 指的就是to stand idly about; linger aimlessly. to stand or wait somewhere, especially in a public place,without any clear reason.
