Chance 和 opportunity 是我们日常生活中常用的两个表示“机会”的词。虽然它们有着几乎相同的含义，但它们在不同的语境中使用，有着不同的用法。许多人倾向于互换使用这些词，但其实这不是一种完全准确的做法。一、opportunity Opportunity 用来谈论一种情况，在这种情况下我们可以做我们想做的事情，比如，如果你得到了MBA学位（情况），那么你就有许多工作机会，这就跟可能性或概率没有多大关系了，常用于搭配 opportunity to do，opportunity for sth/for doing sth 和 opportunity of doing sth 中，意为“机会，时机”，例如：Our company promotes equal opportunities for women.本公司提倡男女机会均等。I had an opportunity to go to New York and study.我曾经有一个去纽约学习的机会。They must regard it as an opportunity for a genuine new start.他们必须把它视为一个真正的新开端的机会。They intend to close the school at the earliest opportunity.他们打算尽早关闭学校。注意：opportunity 倾向于谈论有利的事情的可能性，因此通常是积极的或是褒义的。
二、chance 1. 意为“机会，时机”时，此时同义词是 opportunity，例如：If you give me a chance to speak, I'll explain.如果你给我一个发言的机会，我会解释的。It was the chance she had been waiting for.那正是她一直等待的机会。He left and I missed my chance to say goodbye to him.他走了，我错过了和他道别的机会。2. 意为“可能性”，表示某事发生的可能性，也就是概率，相当于 possibility，比如生男生女的概率是一样的，都是50%，常用于搭配 chance of doing sth，chance that… 和 chance of sth 中，例如：I don't think I stand a chance of winning.我想我没机会赢。There's a slight chance that he'll be back in time.他及时赶回来的可能性不大。The operation has a fifty-fifty chance of success.这次手术成功的可能性是50%。三、两者的区别1 当 chance 意为“机会，时机”时，与 opportunity 的意思是一样的，通常可以互换，例如：他有机会向老板展示他的技能。He got a chance to demonstrate his skills to the boss. (正确)He got an opportunity to demonstrate his skills to the boss. (正确)2. 表示某事发生的可能性或概率，比如生男生女的概率等时，用 chance，不用 opportunity，倾向于谈论中性的事情，附带有不确定性，例如：There's a chance of rain later today.今天晚些时候有可能下雨。3.
