Even as we grieve, we grow.
-- Amanda Gorman
For whilewe have our eyes on the future history has its eyes on us.
It’sbecause being American is more than a pride we inherit. It’s the past we stepinto and how we repair it.
A nationthat isn't broken just unfinished…… acountry that is bruised not broken……
There isalways light if we are brave enough to see it, brave enough to be it
But whiledemocracy can be periodically delayed,it can never bepermanently defeated.
That even as wegrieved, we grew
That even as we hurt,we hoped
That even as we tired,we tried
The Hill We Climb
When day comes we askourselves,
where can we findlight in this never-ending shade?
The loss we carry,
a sea we must wade
We've braved the bellyof the beast
We've learned thatquiet isn't always peace
And the norms andnotions
of what just is
Isn't always just-ice
And yet the dawn isours
before we knew it
Somehow we do it
Somehow we'veweathered and witnessed
a nation that isn'tbroken
but simply unfinished
We the successors of acountry and a time
Where a skinny Blackgirl
descended from slavesand raised by a single mother
can dream of becomingpresident
only to find herselfreciting for one
And yes we are farfrom polished
far from pristine
but that doesn't meanwe are
striving to form aunion that is perfect
We are striving toforge a union with purpose
To compose a countrycommitted to all cultures, colors, characters and
conditions of man
And so we lift ourgazes not to what stands between us
but what stands beforeus
We close the dividebecause we know, to put our future first,
we must first put ourdifferences aside
We lay down our arms
so we can reach outour arms
to one another
We seek harm to noneand harmony for all
Let the globe, ifnothing else, say this is true:
That even as wegrieved, we grew
That even as we hurt,we hoped
That even as we tired,we tried
That we'll forever betied together, victorious
Not because we willnever again know defeat
but because we willnever again sow division
Scripture tells us toenvision
that everyone shallsit under their own vine and fig tree
And no one shall makethem afraid
If we're to live up toour own time
Then victory won't liein the blade
But in all the bridgeswe've made
That is the promise toglade
The hill we climb
If only we dare
It's because beingAmerican is more than a pride we inherit,
it's the past we stepinto
and how we repair it
We've seen a forcethat would shatter our nation
rather than share it
Would destroy ourcountry if it meant delaying democracy
And this effort verynearly succeeded
But while democracycan be periodically delayed
it can never bepermanently defeated
In this truth
in this faith we trust
For while we have oureyes on the future
history has its eyeson us
This is the era ofjust redemption
We feared at itsinception
We did not feelprepared to be the heirs
of such a terrifyinghour
but within it we foundthe power
to author a newchapter
To offer hope andlaughter to ourselves
So while once weasked,
how could we possiblyprevail over catastrophe?
Now we assert
How could catastrophepossibly prevail over us?
We will not march backto what was
but move to what shallbe
A country that isbruised but whole,
benevolent but bold,
fierce and free
We will not be turnedaround
or interrupted byintimidation
because we know ourinaction and inertia
will be theinheritance of the next generation
Our blunders becometheir burdens
But one thing iscertain:
If we merge mercy withmight,
and might with right,
then love becomes ourlegacy
and change ourchildren's birthright
So let us leave behinda country
better than the one wewere left with
Every breath from mybronze-pounded chest,
we will raise thiswounded world into a wondrous one
We will rise from thegold-limbed hills of the west,
we will rise from thewindswept northeast
where our forefathersfirst realized revolution
We will rise from thelake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states,
we will rise from thesunbaked south
We will rebuild,reconcile and recover
and every known nook ofour nation and
every corner calledour country,
our people diverse andbeautiful will emerge,
battered and beautiful
When day comes we stepout of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms aswe free it
For there is alwayslight,
if only we're braveenough to see it
If only we're braveenough to be it
