REMEMBER WHAT YOU HAVE DESTROYED UNDER THE NAME OF DEVELOPMENT

Human beings have consciously or unconsciously destroyed countless things under the name of development or with sweet excuses. The results caused by what we have done are to return to us. The process is slow, but it is same as suicide. I used the image of handcuffs to express suppressed hands and wanted to remind that the action of destruction in handcuffs was like self-injury, not as an image.

FLATTERING AND BACKBITING.

People have and show different behavior. they act to give a good impression when necessary and also criticize others behind them sometimes.

THE RESULT MADE BY UNCONSCIOUS BEHAVIOR.

Once people are fascinated by consciousness for a result, they hardly realise the value of process. This stared from a scene in wich a child was following the manual of a promodel kit in order to finish the peide, doing repeated and mechanical actions. The child, however, did not realise what he had made. That was space after several parts were detached, which was a result itself. This story is what I focused on this project.

Furthermore, I attempted to create a new way of holding jewel which is movable by turning, like his unconscious behavior.

GIFT FROM MYSELF.

I always make a gift after finishing several projects in order to remember that moment. Thus, the gift must be related to the project in the past. The design key word is from the effect of an object which is my first exhibition project in RCA.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL.

I had felt something, like melancolia or isolation for three months, I was not able to figure it out and even unable to explain the feeling. This is because it was not sad or happy but something that I could not define and it was just something I am not used to. There had just been weirdness.

I started to blame external aspects, such as different environment and culture, then I realised that I was a bit closed to those external things and I made the isolation myself.

WHAT YOU SEE IS NOT WHAT IT IS.

People judge others by looking, which sometimes forms delusional expectations.
They want them to fit into a shape and expect them to act like their preconceptions.
Our own persona is killed by all.

THE WALL.

-teapot and warmer.

People build a wall against others to protect their own interests, but can also demolish the wall in order to become closer to those beyond it.
This is a contradictory situation; people from different backgrounds meet one other with a wall that they have set up to hide from outsiders, but they also want to share with each other what they have confined within them.

THE BATTLE OF THE TABLE.

DESSERT CUTLERY FOR GOURMET AND GOURMAND.

I am a light eater for food, but at the same time, a heavy eater for dessert, which means I like all dessert. I, however, always wonder why there is no dessert banquet and why every dessert cutlery is so small. Thus, I prepared a dessert banquet and two collections in one box for gourmet and gourmand.

In this collection, gourmet represents traditional cutlery. Otherwise, gourmand represents a new collection as a proposal. To be specific, a small fork and spoon are kinds of traditional things for gourmet, and six bigger pieces, fork, spoon, ice-cream spoon, knife, butter knife and server, are my concept against the traditional things. These two elements make contrast on the table.

Every single cutlery in my collection has blade on the head and handle for two function, first one on the head is to cut a dessert and another one on the neck is to easily pick my cutlery up. This is because the character of my collection is flater and heavier. And the reason why I did not make pronged-fork is that every dessert is soft and easier to cut than meat, so it means we do not need to hold it for cutting. As I mentioned, six pieces of cutlery are for gourmand and just only for personal use, including server, which makes these people fulfill themselves, not waiting so many time.

This collection has fork-like-shaped cutlery which is in-between knife, spoon and fork. Thus, I need to make a new name, which is ‘HAP’. The meaning of HAP is plus altogether in Korean.

THE EFFECT OF AN OBJECT.

An object acts as an effect in itself. The effect is not confined within the small ring box, but spreads far. It fills in a larger space and influences observers. The effect of an object resembles scent, because it is neither direct nor concrete. The scent flows into the air and discretely makes contact.

For this RCA / Galerie Marzee project all students got an off-the-shelf jeweller’s ring box. It was up to the students what to do with it, where you take it… there was only one rule : everything should happen inside the box, the students could not change the exterior in any way. And the box must be wrapped in an A4 size piece of paper [or similar material] that doubles as an ideas worksheet summarizing in text and images the students’ journey towards the piece contained in the box.

THE HEAD OF SPOON.

I like spoons that are in a stable shape. The shape of spoons may be too familiar for us to pay much attention. Nevertheless, spoons are part of our life for sure. Although modern designs have their own characteristics and aim to attract people’s attention, I tried to show the familiar shape of spoons which I think is important.

What you see is not what it is ll.

The tea ceremony can be seen as one kind of ritual, and coitus could be seen as another. However, as rituals these two activities are treated in different ways. What I suggest is that you see these different events aiming at the same goal, of sharing time, one person with another. What makes us assign different values to activities that in many ways are so similar?
My collection consists of two series of contradictory objects. One sexualises the ritual of a tea ceremony and the other ritualises the sexual act.
