Bite the dust 翻译成“吃土”？可千万别这么理解，在地道美语中，它有两层含义：

第一个含义：企业破产、机器失灵等。

可以从表面引申出来，当你已经需要bite the dust的时候，说明你的经济情况也不太好；如果机器需要bite the dust，那机器肯定也老化、出故障了。

第二个含义：失败、完蛋、死亡。（类似于网络用语“败者食尘”）

这个含义来源于上世纪的西部电影，当牛仔被击中从马上掉下来，地面扬起的尘土塞了满嘴，这也表明他输了，失败了。还有一种说法可以追溯到《荷马史诗》，书中使用了bite the dust形容战士死亡的惨状。

例1：This machine bites the dust  and  it has been completely scrapped.

这部机器失灵了，而且它已经彻底报废了。

例2：At the end of the movie, the protagonist bites the dust.

在电影结尾处，主角挂掉了。

那么吃土的英语怎么说呢？

其实，“吃土”最为准确的译法是“live on dirt”。

Bite your lip 不只是“咬嘴唇”

说到咬嘴唇，大家第一反应就是“bite your lip”，除了这个，它还有更地道的意思。

牛津英语词典这么解释：To stop yourself from saying something or from showing an emotion.

想象一下，把嘴唇咬住，要说话、表达情感就比较难了。因此也不难得出“一言不发、欲言又止”等含义。
